Holly’s Cancer Care Story

Cancer Care That’s Worth the Drive from Anderson Township

Would you travel 25 minutes for cancer treatment if you knew you would receive world-class care from a compassionate team of experts? That’s what Holly, an Anderson Township resident, did. Learn why Holly switched her care to the Yung Family Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth — even though it meant crossing the river and traveling to Edgewood, Ky.

Q: When did you learn you had cancer?

“I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in January 2022,” Holly says. “I had zero symptoms. It completely rocked my world.”

The first step in Holly’s treatment journey was to have surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible. The surgery happened at a different hospital, and afterward, Holly met with the care team to discuss next steps. She realized she didn’t feel comfortable continuing at that cancer center, so she called a high school friend for advice. That friend happened to be Doug Flora, MD, executive medical director of oncology services at St. Elizabeth. Like Holly, Dr. Flora lives in Anderson Township on Cincinnati’s east side.

“During that conversation, Doug didn’t push St. Elizabeth,” Holly says. “He just talked about the care. When my husband and I came to see the center, we realized — it’s a wonderful place.”

Q. You Live in Ohio. Has it Been Worth the Drive to Come to St. Elizabeth?

Holly traveled about 25 minutes for her appointments, but says she would have driven two more hours to come to St. Elizabeth, “where I’m not a number.”

Holly adds, “Every person truly seems to care about me and everybody here. St. Elizabeth was where I was supposed to be.”
