CMS Proposes Cut in 2022 Fee Schedule

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued its CY 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. The rule includes proposed updates to the Medicare conversion factor, telehealth policy, the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), along with other policies. The rule includes a proposed update to the Medicare conversion factor, which currently is $34.89. Based on previously finalized changes to the relative value units (RVUs) and the expiration of a 3.75% payment increase, the proposed conversion factor for CY 2022 is $33.58.

CMS also is proposing to allow a split or shared evaluation and management (E/M) visit by a physician and non-physician practitioners in the same group.

The proposed rule also updates the Quality Payment Program. CMS is proposing to implement the MIPS Value Pathways (MVPs) in 2023 with seven initial options. The standard MIPS program would sunset after the 2027 performance year. CMS will accept comments on the proposal through Sept. 13.

The proposed rule is available on the Federal Register’s website. Fact sheets are available on the CMS website
