More vaccinations, mass vaccination center coming to Northern Kentucky

Written by Brian Hamrick

FORT THOMAS, Ky. — Plans for expanded vaccinations are in the works for Northern Kentucky as the state gets more vaccine and efforts are underway to open a mass vaccination center.

Local health officials are being told Kentucky got a 17% increase in the amount of vaccine it received.

“They did increase that to the state,” St. Elizabeth director of ambulatory pharmacy Angela Brunemann said. “As far as getting more vaccine at specific locations, I think that just depends because they are opening up more sites to be able to offer the vaccine.”

Brunemann said there is still a strong demand for those who are in the 70-plus age group, which is the 1B group. There’s enough of that group still wanting vaccines that opening the 1C group is still a few weeks away.

“I’m 93 years old," Grace Tremper said as she was vaccinated at the St. Elizabeth facility in Erlanger Monday, “I can’t afford to be taking a lot of chances.”

Tremper is like many in the 1B group that have been waiting for enough vaccine to be delivered to get the vaccination.

In order to be ready when more vaccine is available, a mass vaccine location is being scouted in Northern Kentucky.

A statement from the Northern Kentucky Health Department said, “We anticipate a mass vac site in NKY in the upcoming weeks.”

Sources say the Northern Kentucky Convention Center is a likely place for the center.

Kenton County officials and other health care leaders were seen at the facility Monday morning.

No one is giving details about exactly when the center will be open or how many people it might be able to vaccinate in a day.
