Until recently, patients with severe aortic stenosis had only one real option for treatment- open heart surgery. Now, there’s another possibility for these patients.

In just the last two years, a minimally invasive technique known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, has been established and received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acceptance for treatment of those who are considered inoperable or high risk. St. Elizabeth Healthcare is responding to this leading edge trend by opening its own Valve Center as part of the Heart and Vascular Institute at St. Elizabeth Edgewood.

The Valve Center is located on the sixth floor of the hospital in the Vascular Institute, with operating hours on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month.

The center provides an option for patients with aortic stenosis to be evaluated by a team of specialists to determine the best course of treatment. The purpose of the center is to triage patients that may be appropriate for vascular intervention including TAVR and traditional valve surgery.

The center, led by co-medical directors, Saeb Khoury, MD and Victor Schmelzer, MD, will necessitate a multi-specialty, team-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment options for aortic stenosis.

This team will include cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, anesthesiologists, and a patient navigator.

We strive to provide optimal management to these patients, and that is best done in a center where the surgeons and cardiologists are together in one place to assess patients, review the echocardiogram, angiogram and cath lab findings. Our goal is to provide optimal therapy, whether it is open heart surgery or a minimally invasive technique.
