Overview

Portal hypertension is a condition of high blood pressure in the vein that carries blood from the intestine to the liver (portal vein). It often results from liver scarring (cirrhosis).

Symptoms

Symptoms include swelling and discomfort in the belly, confusion, and bloody stools.

Treatments

Treatments may include medications, surgery, or transplant.
