Overview

Protein malnutrition, also called kwashiorkor, mostly happens in geographical areas with limited food. It is seen in children whose diets are low in protein and calories.

Symptoms

Delayed growth in children, changes in skin and hair color, a swollen belly, and frequent infections are symptoms.

Treatments

Treatment for kwashiorkor may include a slow increase in calories followed by an increase in protein.
