Bleeding inside the body, particularly in the chest or belly cavities, or into muscles.

When to seek immediate medical care

Seek emergency help if:

  • Bleeding from a body opening, such as the ear, mouth, nose or anus.
  • Vomiting or coughing up blood.
  • Passing black or bloody stools.
  • Shock, indicated by a rapid, weak pulse; pale skin; sweating; rapid breathing; and decreased alertness.
