Self-care

Wear bras that provide extra support. For intense pain, try medicine called a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that comes in cream form.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if breast pain:

  • Happens with a new breast lump, changes such as areas of thickening or nipple discharge.
  • Happens daily for more than a couple of weeks.
  • Happens in one specific area of the breast.
  • Seems to become worse over time.
  • Limits the ability to do daily activities.
  • Disrupts sleep.
