Greater Cincinnati hospital system elects government official as board chairman

Written by Barrett J. Brunsman

St. Elizabeth Healthcare’s board has elected Boone County Judge-executive Gary Moore as its new chairman.

Moore succeeds Jim Votruba, the former president of Northern Kentucky University. Votruba will remain on the board of the Edgewood-based hospital system until completion of his second five-year term as a member.

“Gary has a long and distinguished record of leadership both in government and as a St. Elizabeth board member,” Votruba said. “I have no doubt that St. Elizabeth will continue to thrive under Gary’s strong leadership. It’s been an honor to serve this outstanding healthcare system, and I look forward to my continued involvement.”

Moore has been on the hospital system's board since the merger of St.Elizabeth with St. Luke in 2008. He has served as chair of the St.Elizabeth Governance Committee since then. The committee oversees board development and the board nomination process, and it monitors government and legislative affairs on behalf of the healthcare system.

“St. Elizabeth sits at the very heart of our region’s future,” Moore said.“I believe that the board of trustees has a vital role to play in the partnership with the St. Elizabeth leadership team as we chart a future course on behalf of the public we serve.”

The St. Elizabeth board approves strategic plans to establish the long-term direction and safeguard the mission and values of the 157-year old organization, which has an annual budget of about $1 billion.

St. Elizabeth is the dominant healthcare provider and the largest employer in Northern Kentucky. St. E has more than 8,200 employees, including more than 325 doctors.

In addition to its flagship hospital in Edgewood, the St. E health system operates nonprofit hospitals in Fort Thomas, Florence and Williamstown as well as a Covington ambulatory center with a 24/7 emergency room,a medical center in Owenton and more than 100 primary care and specialty office locations. The system is sponsored by the Diocese of Covington.

Moore was first elected judge-executive of Boone County in 1998. The judge-executive is the highest elected office in Boone County, which is the fourth largest in Kentucky. He also serves on the executive committee of the Tri-County Economic Development Corp.

He has served as chair of the OKI Regional Council of Governments, and Moore currently is second vice president of OKI and the first vice president of the Kentucky Association of Counties.

Moore is a member of the Northern Kentucky University Foundation and co-chair of the NKU Advocacy Committee. He also is a member of the Greater Cincinnati YMCA board of directors and the board of the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
