Pastoral Care

At St. Elizabeth, we understand that truly great health has many facets. And we know that our spiritual health plays a huge role in our overall well-being. Simply put, we can’t really thrive if our spiritual needs are not being met. That’s why our pastoral care professionals are here.

A Source of Spiritual Support in Your Time of Need

We believe that when a person is in the hospital, it is important to not only provide quality medical care, but to care for their emotional and spiritual needs, as well.

Regardless of your faith tradition or spiritual belief, we want to help meet your needs for spiritual fulfillment. Our staff of ordained and lay chaplains and volunteers is always available and well-trained in the specific demands of hospital ministry. We offer a ministry that is present, supportive and engaged, in your time of need.

Chaplain Availability

A chaplain from our hospital is available for pastoral support, individual consultation, scripture reading or prayer. Often it is helpful just to talk with a chaplain about what you’re experiencing. Our chaplains are trained to offer support to all people, regardless of faith or beliefs. This service is available for you, your family and loved ones.

A chaplain is also on call at all times. So, in an emergency, simply ask a hospital associate to contact the operator (dial “0”) on your behalf and page a chaplain.

Catholic Services Available

St. Elizabeth is sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Covington. As such, we offer several Catholic services at our hospitals as part of extending the healing ministry of Jesus and as a ministry of the Catholic Church.

Daily Holy Communion is distributed by our volunteer Eucharistic Ministers, as they are available. If you would like to receive Communion, please ask the nurse to contact the Pastoral Care department on your behalf, and we will add you to the Communion list.

St. Elizabeth Edgewood: Holy Mass is offered in our Chapel at Noon on weekdays and at 8:30 a.m. on holy days and Sundays. The Mass is shown on at all hospitals on our television network, Channel 3.

Anointing of the Sick

If you’re anticipating admission to St. Elizabeth and wish to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, please contact your parish priest prior to your admission. If you’re a patient and would like to receive the Sacrament of Anointing, please call our pastoral care department at (859) 301-2190, and we will work to facilitate a priest visit as they are available. If it is an emergency, please have your nurse call the operator “0” and have the Chaplain On-Call paged.

For Visiting Clergy

St. Elizabeth Healthcare prioritizes the care of the whole person, which focuses on the health of mind, body, and spirit.  In support of this priority, a patient or their family may request their own clergy member from their own church or faith community to visit them while they are in the hospital.  Please be aware of the following guidelines for visiting clergy:

  • The patient or family member of the patient needs to have requested the clergy member to visit.
  • Our professional chaplains will notify a clergy member of a patient admission only if the patient themselves has requested we do so.
  • St. Elizabeth’s currently has no visitor restrictions during regular hours, so an outside clergy member (a non-St. Elizabeth Healthcare employee) will no longer need a special clergy badge to visit.

  • Visiting clergy should follow Visitor Guidelines for any updates.

  • If a clergy member comes to the hospital in an emergency situation after normal hours, they are to go to the Security desk and provide an ID to get a temporary visitor badge.
  • If any support is needed, our Pastoral Care Department can help facilitate visits between clergy and patients, when they are specifically requested by the patients themselves.
  • We suggest clergy call the patient’s unit – via the hospital operator at (859) 301-2000 – to ask about visiting times to particular units, because these hours vary for different units.
