Nipple fissure

Updated: 2023-11-15

Description

A dry, sore, irritated, or cracked nipple.

Overview

Nipple fissure typically occurs in runners and weightlifters, from chafing against clothing. It also occurs when breast-feeding.

Symptoms

Symptoms include soreness, crusting, oozing, and bleeding of the nipple.

Treatments

Purified lanolin or a hydrogel dressing can soothe cracked nipples and help them retain moisture. If the nipple becomes infected, a topical antibiotic may help.
