Updated: 2017-06-13

Overview

Skin writing (dermatographic urticaria) is a condition in which scratching the skin causes raised, hive-like lines.

Symptoms

The condition may cause itchiness. Lines usually vanish within 30 minutes but can last several hours to days.

Treatments

If the condition is bothersome, an over-the-counter antihistamine can provide relief.
