News Room: How old is your heart: New Cardiovascular Mobile Health Unit test reveals your cardiac age

Many of us invest a lot of money and worry into ways to assuage any signs of age. But how much money and thought have you put into keeping your heart young and healthy?

Well, now for a mere $25 and about 10 minutes of your time, you can find out just how old your heart really is with a simple finger-stick blood test and the answers to a few questions from the staff of our CardioVascular Mobile Health Unit.

This February – National Heart Month – St. Elizabeth began performing Cardiac Age Health Risk Assessments at the popular mobile health unit. The new screening is being offered, along with the option of three other critical cardiovascular screenings for peripheral arterial disease, stroke/carotid artery blockages and abdominal aortic aneurysms. All told, the screenings take about 30 minutes and provide indispensable information about your overall cardiovascular health.

The new cardiac age assessment is based on the pivotal work of the well-known Framingham Heart Study, which identified seven components of cardiovascular health, including:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Total cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol
  • Blood pressure
  • Smoking history
  • Diabetes

The new risk assessment requires only that you answer a few basic questions and fast four hours before a quick finger-prick and small blood draw. Your answers and blood test results are then immediately entered into a computer for processing with specially designed software, which uses the information to calculate your cardiac age from 30 to the 70s. The goal is to be either equal to or younger than your chronological age.

Each patient receives a print-out of their results showing both your total cardiac age, as well as whether you fall in the desirable, borderline or high risk range for each of the following tests:

  • Total cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol
  • Triglycerides
  • LDL cholesterol
  • Blood glucose
  • BMI
  • Systolic and diastolic blood pressure

So, what about you? How old is your heart? Find out by calling (859) 301-WELL (9355) to register for the new screening offering today.
