Parotitis is swelling of 1 or both of the largest saliva-producing glands inside the cheeks (parotid glands). The glands may feel tender and may contain pus.

The most common cause is mumps. Other causes include the flu, staph infection, and diabetes.

When the underlying condition is treated, it clears up. Treatment may include antibiotics.
