Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Updated: 2017-06-13

The cause of NAFLD is uncertain. Risk factors include obesity, gastric bypass surgery, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.

Most people have no symptoms. Others may experience fatigue, pain, or weight loss. Sometimes, inflammation and scarring (cirrhosis) occur, causing liver failure or cancer.

No standard treatment exists. Instead, doctors will treat the underlying condition, such as obesity.
