Body lice

Updated: 2023-10-17

Description

A contagious, itchy infestation caused by insects.

Overview

Insects called body lice feed on blood. They live in clothing and bedding but travel to the skin to feed. Body lice can spread from person to person through close contact or through infested clothing or bedding.

Symptoms

Body lice bites can cause intense itching. Small areas of blood and crust may appear on bitten skin. The most common sites for bites are around the neck, shoulders, armpits, waist and groin.

Treatments

Body lice treatment mainly involves washing the body and any infested items. Lotion or shampoo available without a prescription that has 1% permethrin (Nix) or pyrethrin can help. Prescription lotion may be needed.
