News Room: Reiley Elementary Students Brighten Cancer Care Center Waiting Room

Recently, a busload of 50 second grade students and their teachers from John W. Reiley Elementary School delivered a flat screen TV and a check for $1,046 to the St. Elizabeth Healthcare Cancer Care Center Waiting Room.

Student teacher and NKU undergrad, Adam Bessler, was assigned a leadership project by NKU. He knew the principal of Reiley Elementary was extremely supportive of service learning, so he decied a donation project was the way to go. He said the decision to make the donation to the St. Elizabeth Cancer Care Center was easy.

“I lost my mother to cancer when I was their age. I remember going to St. Elizabeth Edgewood for my mother’s treatments and never having anything to do, so I decided a letter asking the Cancer Care Center what they needed was the best next step.”

As a class, they contacted the Cancer Care Center by writing a letter and quickly received a reply asking for a TV for the waiting room and a birdfeeder for the garden where patients receive treatments.

“The project was as student-led as I could make it,” Mr. Bessler said.

Students chose the activities, set goals, assisted in the fundraising activities and created school-wide advertising. The ideas for raising funds came from the students as well and were voted on as a class. A school-wide “Penny War” garnered the most funds, followed closely by a bracelet sale, special outfit days, a LaRosa’s fundraiser and a staff jeans day. In addition, KOI Auto Parts donated the remainder of the funds needed to meet their goal of $2,000.

After all donations were counted, the students were excited to find that they had exceeded their goal and were able to make a $2,233 donation and assist in making the waiting room and treatment areas of Cancer Care a little brighter for St. Elizabeth patients.
