Dr. Peter Jernigan is a board-certified general surgeon with experience treating a wide-range of surgical problems including diseases of the gastrointestinal system (gallbladder, stomach, small intestine, colon, appendix), hernias, and skin and soft tissue diseases such as skin cysts and tumors. He also has extensive experience with treatment of stomach diseases, GERD, hiatal/paraoesophageal hernia, weight-loss surgery and achalasia. In addition to comprehensive general surgery training, he completed a minimally-invasive surgery fellowship and is passionate about using laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic techniques to help his patients recover from illness and from surgery as quickly as possible. He completed medical school at the University of Alabama-Birmingham followed by general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati and fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He and his wife, both natives of Alabama, met in Cincinnati and have two children. He practiced general and bariatric surgery for five years in Alabama prior to returning to the tristate area to join St. Elizabeth General Surgeons.
