Larry began his cancer treatment in Cincinnati. But within a few weeks, he realized he needed a change. The long-time Anderson Township resident called the Yung Family Cancer Center at St. Elizabeth — Edgewood. He felt shocked when Dr. Doug Flora, MD, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, spent an hour talking to him.
In this episode of Rounding with Patients, Larry shares why he decided to switch to St. Elizabeth, even though it was a 25-minute drive from home.
Q: Why Did You Switch Your Cancer Care to St. Elizabeth?
The first place I got care was a sad place to be. I felt like I was just part of a herd of cattle. When my doctor gave me my treatment plan, it was basic information without any guidance.
Q: But St. Elizabeth was Different.
Oh, yes. Dr. Doug gives me guidance, he tells me what my next step is. He tells me what drugs I’m taking. The nurses do the same thing. You got the best nurses there ever was. It’s a great place to come — there’s a family presence.
Q: What is Special About the Yung Family Cancer Center?
Dr. Doug is the man, the myth, the legend right here. He is a wonderful doctor — the best doctor I ever had.
I got great care at St. Elizabeth. But it was more than that. You’re not a number here. I talk to Dr. Doug for a while, and he either pumps me up or gives me a hug, whatever I need at the moment. He takes care of patients. It’s more than just the cancer treatment. I would say with me it’s probably 80% mental. Keep on going, keep on fighting it.
Q. You Live in Ohio. Has it Been Worth the Drive to Come to St. Elizabeth?
St. Elizabeth has the best facility, the best nurses and the number one doctors. What else can you ask for? You’re not going to get that anywhere else.
