Overview: Strep is a bacterial infection in the throat and tonsils that is contagious through respiratory droplets or direct contact. Strep throat is treatable with antibiotics.
Signs & Symptoms: Symptoms can include sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, red/swollen tonsils, swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck, red spots on the roof of the mouth, white patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils, headache, nausea/vomiting, stomach pain, and rash.
Contagious Period: People diagnosed with strep throat are contagious from the onset of symptoms, while they have a fever, and until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours.
