Former Cincinnati Reds Star Eric Davis Shares Powerful Message on Early Colorectal Cancer Detection

When former Cincinnati Reds legend Eric Davis walked into the St. Elizabeth Cancer Center, he brought more than his celebrated #44 jersey number and unforgettable on-field accomplishments. He brought a life-saving message rooted in lived experience. Joined by Dr. Doug Flora, Medical Oncologist and Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Davis shares his colorectal cancer story to help others understand the urgent importance of early detection.

Davis was just 34 years old, in peak athletic condition and playing Major League Baseball, when sudden abdominal pain changed everything. What began as a sports injury quickly became a medical mystery.

“I was in so much pain, but nobody could tell me what was wrong,” Davis recalls. After days in the hospital without answers, his symptoms continued to worsen. When he arrived at Johns Hopkins, physicians performed a colonoscopy and discovered a tumor. “They told me I had a tumor the size of a grapefruit, and they had to go get it,” he says. Davis underwent surgery two days later and describes finally getting an accurate diagnosis as the turning point that saved his life.

His experience highlights how critical it is to get clear answers when something doesn’t feel right. At St. Elizabeth Healthcare, our cancer experts emphasize that early detection and second opinions can lead to faster, more accurate diagnoses – and ultimately save lives.

Why Early Detection Matters More Than Ever

Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and highly curable when caught early. Dr. Flora emphasized that Kentucky has some of the highest rates of colorectal cancer in the nation, especially in communities where access to care is limited or screening isn’t part of routine health habits.

“We can’t keep waiting for cancer to show up. We have to get ahead of it,” Dr. Flora exclaims. He explained that screening now begins at age 45 for most adults, and even younger for those with symptoms or a family history.

Davis hopes sharing his story encourages more people to act sooner rather than later. “Early detection saves lives,” he says. “As men, we’ve always been taught to be strong and endure pain, but that mindset is dangerous. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.”

The St. Elizabeth Approach: Care That Meets You Where You Are

During their conversation, Davis praised St. Elizabeth for their “one-stop shop” model, which brings world-class cancer care, research, genetics, prevention and treatment together under one roof. Dr. Flora explained that this approach is designed to remove barriers and make care more accessible across Northern Kentucky, Southeastern Indiana and the Greater Cincinnati region.

He also highlighted St. Elizabeth’s commitment to communities that have historically lacked access to screenings. “We have to make sure everyone is included,” he said. “That means education, outreach and meeting people where they are.”

In addition to expanding access, St. Elizabeth is leading advanced research on early detection, including work on blood tests that may one day detect cancer at its earliest stages, long before symptoms appear.

A Message of Hope from #44

Davis’ journey underscores an important truth: colorectal cancer can happen to anyone. He was young, symptom-free, active and had no family history. His experience is a reminder that screening is not something to postpone.

“When you talk about something that’s preventable and being able to live a long, healthy life, that’s what matters,” Davis explains. “Getting checked is a small price to pay.”

His willingness to share his story, partnered with the commitment of St. Elizabeth to early detection, prevention and research, has the power to change – and save – lives across the region.
