CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A groundbreaking screening program is being piloted to help reduce the cancer risk among firefighters, who face a 9% higher chance of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from it compared to the general population.

The initiative, led by Dr. Michael Gieske, director of the St. Elizabeth Healthcare Lung Cancer Screening Program, focuses on early detection, particularly of lung cancer, which firefighters are prone to due to exposure to carcinogens at fire scenes.
