Personalized Care for Every Stage of Heart Health

At St. Elizabeth, our Cardiology team is a foundational part of the Florence Wormald Heart & Vascular Institute, providing advanced expertise and compassionate care for patients across Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Our board-certified clinical and interventional cardiologists deliver innovative treatments and comprehensive services, ensuring every patient receives the highest standard of heart care from a team they trust.

Clinical Cardiologists

Our clinical cardiologists are experts in diagnosing, preventing and managing a broad spectrum of heart conditions using noninvasive, patient-centered approaches. They partner with you to develop personalized strategies for long-term heart health – whether you’re addressing high blood pressure, cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.

Utilizing sophisticated diagnostic technology and evidence-based care, our clinical team collaborates with primary care providers, endocrinologists, lipid specialists and pharmacists to deliver seamless, coordinated treatment plans. Their goal is to empower you with the knowledge and support needed to maintain and improve your cardiovascular wellness.

Interventional Cardiologists

Interventional cardiologists are highly skilled in performing non-surgical, catheter-based procedures to treat obstructions around the heart. They often serve as the first line of treatment for blocked arteries or structural heart issues, offering life-saving interventions such as:

  • Restoring blood flow during a heart attack.
  • Opening narrowed arteries with balloon angioplasty and stents.
  • Removing plaque buildup with atherectomy.
  • Removing a blood clot from a blood vessel with a thrombectomy.
  • Drain extra fluid from around the heart.

These procedures are performed in our state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Labs, where advanced imaging and technology make these life-saving interventions possible.

When a patient’s condition requires more complex intervention, our cardiac surgeons step in to provide innovative surgical solutions. Interventional cardiologists often identify surgical candidates during diagnostic evaluations and help guide referrals to the St. Elizabeth Heart Surgery team – ensuring a seamless transition between diagnostic, medical and procedural care.

Expert Cardiac Emergency Care: When Every Second Counts

There’s a saying, ‘time is muscle.’ It refers to the fact that someone having a heart attack needs care urgently to prevent or reduce damage to the heart muscle. Minutes count.

If you or a loved one experience symptoms of a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

Do not try to drive yourself to the hospital or ask a friend or family member to drive you. When you call an ambulance, the paramedics will begin lifesaving treatment right on the spot. They’ll alert our Emergency Department that they’re on their way. Members of a specialized care team at the hospital will be made aware of your vitals and ready to jump into action when you arrive. You will be transported to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab straight away for a diagnostic angiogram. An interventional cardiologist will begin treatment to restore blood flow to your heart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heart disease is a general term for several conditions that affect how your heart works. The most common type is coronary artery disease (CAD), which happens when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to your heart. This buildup can reduce blood flow and lead to chest pain, shortness of breath or even a heart attack.

Other types of heart disease include:

  • Heart Failure– when the heart can’t pump blood effectively.
  • Arrhythmias– irregular heartbeats.
  • Valvular heart disease – when valves don’t open or close properly.
  • Congenital heart defects– heart problems present at birth.

Heart disease often develops over time and may not show symptoms right away. But with early detection, healthy lifestyle changes and the right treatment, it can be managed – and even prevented.

Common warning signs include:

  • Fatigue or feeling unusually tired.
  • Shortness of breath during routine activities.
  • Chest discomfort or pressure (not always pain).
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles or feet.
  • Irregular heartbeat or palpitations.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.

If you notice any of these symptoms – especially if they’re new or worsening – talk to your doctor. Early evaluation can help prevent serious complications.

If you have uncontrollable high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease, or symptoms like chest discomfort or palpitations, a cardiologist can help assess your risk and guide your care.

Common tests include EKGs, stress tests, echocardiograms and blood work. Your cardiologist will recommend the right tests based on your symptoms and personal history.

For your first cardiology appointment, please bring:

  • A list of your current medications (including dosages).
  • Your medical history and any relevant records (such as previous heart tests or procedures).
  • Your insurance card and identification.
  • A list of symptoms or concerns you want to discuss.
  • Contact information for your primary care provider and any other specialists you see.

If you have questions about what to bring, feel free to call (859) 287-3045 before your visit. Being prepared helps your cardiologist provide the most effective care.
