St. Elizabeth Hospice: Comfort Beyond Words

Comfort Beyond Words: Born in the foothills of Appalachia during the Great Depression, Ruby Faye Raleigh learned at an early age that these characteristics were necessary to survive. From her childhood home in Wolf Coal, Ky., the closest high school was 45 minutes away. When the commute to school became too much, she put her dreams of completing her high school degree on hold. Leaving her childhood home at 17-years-old, she moved nearly 200 miles away to join her older sisters as a factory laborer. Ruby spent years working at a factory in Newport, Ky. sending money back home to family while starting one of her own with her husband, Andy Ducker. Ruby’s patience and persistent spirit throughout her life paid off. At age 40, the mother of two accomplished a long-deferred dream, earning her GED. Independence. Self-reliance. Hard work. Determination.
