Aromatherapy During Labor & Delivery

Personalize Your Birth Experience

At the St. Elizabeth Family Birth Place, we know that giving birth is a deeply personal and life-changing experience. We are proud to offer our patients comprehensive services, a state-of-the-art facility and skilled staff who will help to make your experience as wonderful as possible.

St. Elizabeth Family Birth Place in Edgewood is proud to offer aromatherapy services to our mothers-to-be. Research has shown that using essential oils can help with relaxation, pain relief and a variety of symptoms that occur during labor, such as nausea and anxiety. Using essential oils during labor and delivery is one more way St. Elizabeth can offer our patients control and personalization of their birth experience.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy can be used hand-in-hand with traditional medicine to benefit patients. Aromatherapy utilizes essential oils to help manage symptoms, improve pain and enhance mood, focus and energy. St. Elizabeth uses the highest grade essential oils that are proven safe for prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum mothers.

How is Aromatherapy used during labor and delivery?

St. Elizabeth now has two certified Clinical Aromatherapist RNs working in the Labor and Delivery department. Aromatherapy is offered to patients via topical application, inhalation and individual spritzers that the patient is welcome to take home with them.

The oils menu for our patients includes:

  • Clary Sage
  • Frankincense
  • Jasmine
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Mandarin
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Rose

Our Aromatherapist RNs walk patients through the oil menu, explaining the benefits of each oil and also pointing out any allergy or limitations. For example, Rose essential oil cannot be used for pregnant women earlier than 34 weeks and Clary Sage can be used to enhance contractions. Aromatherapy is a great holistic option for mothers during their labor, delivery and postpartum.
