Deborah Rast’s Story: Finding Care and Community at Dearborn Cancer Center

Deborah Rast expected a routine gallbladder surgery followed by a smooth recovery. Instead, her life changed in an instant when her biopsy results came back positive for cancer. “The speed of the response was incredible; an appointment was set up at the Dearborn Cancer Center for the very next day,” Deborah recalls.

That immediate action helped Deborah feel grounded during an otherwise overwhelming moment. Having recently moved from New York to Indiana, she was still getting her bearings in a new community. What stood out most was how seamlessly her care was coordinated from the very beginning.

“The surgeon who removed my gallbladder had everything set up for me when he gave me the diagnosis. He told me the plan and everything, which was perfect in my opinion,” Deborah shares.

That sense of clarity and direction continued during her first visit to St. Elizabeth Dearborn Cancer Center. Meeting her team – a nurse navigator, social worker and Dr. Matthew Kotlove, an Oncologist at St. Elizabeth – provided Deborah with immediate comfort. “I realized right then that I wasn’t doing this alone; I had an entire support system for my journey,” she says.

Care That Goes Beyond Treatment

As treatment progressed, Deborah experienced firsthand how personalized support can ease both physical and emotional challenges. After having stents placed, nutrition became a critical part of her care.

“My dietitian was instrumental in helping me navigate what I could eat after having stents placed. She visited me during every chemo session with helpful printouts and even brought me special samples from her cooking classes that met my dietary needs,” Deborah shares.

Along with her dietician, Deborah had a social worker to help her and her family navigate financial resources and offer additional support. “She was incredibly patient during our wig consultations, meeting with us twice while I found the perfect fit.”

Finally, Deborah’s nurse navigator made sure she never felt alone between appointments. “My nurse navigator checks in constantly to ensure I have everything I need, often dropping off helpful samples like sunscreen and protein drinks,” she says.

Supporting the Whole Person

Supporting Deborah meant caring for more than her physical health—it meant caring for her as a whole person. Counseling services in Edgewood became a vital source of strength.

“Knowing my counselor is there every step of the way provides immense peace of mind. I’ve also benefited from the Edgewood food pantry.”

That sense of support extended into other areas of wellness, as well. Relaxation and breathing techniques helped Deborah manage stress, while spiritual care provided comfort during moments of uncertainty.

“The pastor offers consistent support and prayers specifically tailored to my testing and scan dates,” she says.

As Deborah moved through chemotherapy, that same compassion followed her into the Infusion Department, where clinical care and human connection went hand in hand.

“The nurses in the Infusion Department are simply the best. They make you feel special and go out of their way to make the hours spent there not just bearable, but comfortable,” Deborah exclaims.

Advice for Others Facing a New Diagnosis

Reflecting on her journey, Deborah encourages others to seek care close to home. “I would tell anyone who was recently diagnosed to go to St. Elizabeth. I have nothing but good things to say about my care team.”

She also offers practical advice for navigating a new diagnosis. “I would recommend a book to write down any questions and take notes. I would also recommend taking advantage of all the extra services, like counseling and nutrition. And lean on family and friends so you can focus on feeling better. Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Deborah advises.

More Than Care – A Community

For Deborah Rast, cancer care at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Cancer Center has meant more than medical treatment.

“I am deeply grateful for the compassionate, well-rounded care I’ve received. The Dearborn Cancer Center has provided me with much more than just medical treatment – they have given me a community.”
