The St. Elizabeth Healthcare Respiratory Care Department will be offering a free screening to help identify a genetic disorder called Alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, also known as Alpha-1 on Wednesday, March 20 from 4 –8 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Edgewood in conference rooms F and G.

This free screening involves a simple finger-stick blood test, and fasting is not required before the test.  This screening is open to anyone but those individuals who would be a good candidate include:
• Adults with emphysema regardless of smoking history.
• Adults with COPD regardless of smoking history.
• Adults with uncontrolled asthma.
• Siblings of individuals with Alpha-1.

Alpha-1 is a type of chronic lung disease that presents as COPD but is not caused by smoking.  There is a significantly large population of people who have lung disease but are not showing any symptoms; often times that is caused by the Alpha-1 deficinacy.

In addition to the Alpha-1 screening, there will also be a basic Spirometry and Oximetry test offered.
