How We Check the Health of Your Bones

Bone Density Testing:
At Women’s Wellness Osteoporosis Services, we can get a very good, very detailed look at exactly how strong your bones are through the use of some awesome state-of-the-art technology. We use a DEXA scanner to quickly and painlessly measure your bone mass, a test which can:

  • Detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs.
  • Predict your chances of future fractures.
  • Determine your rate of bone loss
  • Monitor the effects of treatment.
Bone density testing is available at both The Fischer Homes Breast Center at St. Elizabeth Women’s Wellness in Edgewood and Women’s Wellness in Covington. You need an order for the test from your doctor. Please call for an appointment at (859) 655-7400.

Vertebral Fracture Assessment
For those with osteoporosis, breaks in the vertebrae, which make up our backbones, are the most common type of fracture. Nonetheless, only about a quarter of these potentially devastating fractures are actually diagnosed when they occur.

That’s where Vertebral Fracture Assessment – VFA - comes in. VFA technology uses the DEXA scanner to make an image of the spine. These highly detailed images are then used to diagnose vertebral fractures. This diagnosis is critical because pre-existing fractures vastly increase the risk of future breaks and they are associated with an increase risk of illness or death. But, once you’re aware that you’ve suffered a fracture, you can begin treatment and prevention measures.

VFA is available at both the The Fischer Homes Breast Center at St. Elizabeth Women’s Wellness in Edgewood and Women’s Wellness in Covington. You need an order for the test from your doctor. Please call for an appointment at (859) 655-7400.
