Hospice Medical/Palliative Fellowship Director

BC/BE (fellowship completed) in Hospice and Palliative Care required. The physician will serve as both the Director for the Palliative Fellowship (with teaching responsibilities) and as Hospice Medical Director (making home visits, rounding on hospice inpatients, quality assessment/performance improvement, serving as attending for hospice patients w/o an attending, and certifying patients/recertifying patients). The physician will also provide some back up coverage to inpatient palliative care.

Physician is responsible for providing patient care and on-call services, education, supervision, consultation, and coordination of hospice services. Physician serves as Medical Director for the following services and locations: Hospice Home Program, Edgewood and Ft. Thomas in-patient units, and Hospice Partner, patients in the St. Elizabeth facilities and for the Hospice/Palliative Care Fellowship Program. May provide care in home and at extended care facilities. Physician serves as liaison to the medical staffs that refer patients to the hospice program.

Physician must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with professionals and lay groups, excellent knowledge of fundamentals of pain and symptom management, ability to articulate principles of hospice care and Interdisciplinary concepts, and work collaboratively with medical staff and as part of interdisciplinary team, ability to clinically and emotionally support terminally ill patients and their family in varying settings and to discuss news that is difficult to hear, familiarity with Medicare Conditions of Participation and Hospice Medicare Benefit.

5 years of experience as attending physician in family practice, internal medicine, oncology, geriatric medicine is wanted, 2 years’ experience with terminally ill patients and their families preferred, experience in homecare medicine and/or inpatient palliative and hospice care is beneficial. Current or previous Fellows in Hospice/Palliative Care are encouraged to apply.
