“Heart to Heart” event brings St. Elizabeth, Mayo experts together to discuss arrhythmia Thursday May 15, 2014 Approximately 200 people attended “A Heart-to-Heart about Arrhythmia” on Tuesday May 13, featuring Thomas P. Carrigan, MD, from the St. Elizabeth Heart & Vascular Institute and Christopher J. McLeod, MB, ChB, PhD, from Mayo Clinic. Both physicians specialize in cardiac electrophysiology, a specialty that focuses on heart rhythm disorders. They described the electrical system of the heart, typical problems that can occur, and the latest treatment options for many rhythm disorders, including the most common arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation. They also talked about the connection between atrial fibrillation and stroke. Both physicians stayed afterward and answered questions from audience members. “It was a wonderful opportunity to engage and educate the community,” Dr. Carrigan said. “And it was a pleasure to co-present with Dr. McLeod.” St. Elizabeth is a member of the exclusive Mayo Clinic Care Network. This community seminar is one example of how the Mayo Clinic Care Network benefits the community, bringing experts from Mayo here to jointly present community education alongside local experts.
