Prevention & Wellness

We’re committed to reducing the number of heart-related deaths in our region. Sign up for a screening, come to a class or attend one of our events — we’ll help you take control of your health.

Our Commitment to Prevent Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease, which affects the heart and blood vessels, is the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S. But, according to the American Heart Association, 80% of heart disease and stroke events may be prevented with lifestyle changes and education.

As a regional and national leader in heart care with outcomes second to none in Greater Cincinnati, we believe it’s part of our role to help prevent heart disease. That’s why the Florence Wormald Heart & Vascular Institute at St. Elizabeth set a goal: To work with our community to reduce heart-related deaths in Northern Kentucky 25% by the end of 2025 – what we call “25 by ’25.”

Reduce Your Risk for Heart Disease

When you know your risk factors, follow your doctor’s screening recommendations and adopt heart-healthy behaviors, you can protect yourself from heart and vascular disease.

Here’s how we can help:

  • Heart education and prevention programs – We offer a variety of programs to promote healthful habits, including interactive education for kids and heart-health classes for adults.
  • Lifesaving health tips – Through our community outreach efforts, we help you recognize heart attack symptoms and show you how to deliver hands-only CPR to someone in cardiac arrest – knowing this information can save lives.
  • Heart and vascular screenings – Our CardioVascular Mobile Health Unit offers convenient, low-cost screenings to help you lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and other vascular diseases. In addition, we offer a variety of classes, including the Freedom from Smoking-cessation program and special classes for those living with heart failure.

  • Recognizing health disparities in our communities – We work together with communities to improve health disparities through early diagnosis, improving access to physicians, and community outreach programs.

  • Recognizing women’s heart health is different than men’s – We know symptoms of heart disease can be different in women than in men so we’re committed to ensuring women know their risks and have access to personalized heart care.

The Heart of it All: Joyce’s Story

Joyce Jacobs knows heart health, inside and out. As a Heart and Vascular Prevention and Wellness Nurse Navigator at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Joyce works with cardiac patients with the CardioVascular Mobile Health Unit (CVMHU) team. As an avid exerciser and healthy eater, Joyce wasn’t expecting the technician to find anything on her screening. What she learned came as a surprise.
