The holidays have been over for a while now, and perhaps you didn’t get everything you were hoping for.
Just remember: It’s not too late to buy yourself a wonderful gift that will keep on giving throughout the New Year. I am referring to fitness gadgets.
Consider pedometers or step trackers, heart rate monitors, food diaries or online meal planning systems. Sometimes it’s hard to spend money on tools like this, but you can’t put a price on getting healthy.
Several studies have shown that people who keep food journals are more likely to be successful in losing weight and keeping it off. How does writing down what you eat and drink in a food journal work this kind of magic? Keeping a food diary increases your awareness of what, how much and why you are eating.
If knowledge is power, then a food diary is your power to make the necessary changes to meet your nutrition goals.
If food diaries work wonders for weight loss, would a fitness diary work as well? Yes.
Nutrition and fitness need to co-exist; balance is the key. As you go into 2014, consider these tools to help you stay focused and aware.
- Quality pedometer (e.g., Omron, Fitbit, Nike Fuel Band, Jawbone)
- Heart-rate monitor: Stay in your target heart rate zone for optimizing weight loss
- Online meal tracker or food logging app: Awareness is key
- Online meal planner: A program that gives breakfast, lunch and dinner options with built-in recipes and grocery lists
- Anylist App: A great way to facilitate easy meal planning by ensuring all food items are on hand for healthy eating. It is a fantastically easy way to share your grocery list with your spouse.
