NEWPORT — A new St. Elizabeth Healthcare medical office should be ready for residents in January 2014 and will bring an additional eight to nine physicians and supporting staff to the city.

Work is set to begin in May on the 25,000-square-foot medical office to be located at 1360 Grand Ave. Construction. Cost is estimated at $6.5 million, said St. Elizabeth Healthcare spokesman Guy Karrick.

Hospital officials had a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday at the site, which is adjacent to St. Elizabeth Healthcare Fort Thomas hospital.

The facility will provide primary care, urgent care, OB/GYN services, ultrasound, cardiology treatment and heart and vascular testing, Karrick said.

Dr. Glenn Loomis, present and CEO of St. Elizabeth Healthcare, said the medical office is planned to provide patients with a “comfortable, serene, non-institutional” place for care.

“It will be our first integreted multi-specialty space,” Loomis told numerous physicians and community leaders who attended an announcement and a groundbreaking Wednesday at the site.

“We want to respond to the needs of our community,” Loomis said.

He noted that the Campbell County region, and especially Fort Thomas and Newport, have fewer options than other areas for nearby medical offices, so the new location will better assist their needs.

John Dubis, president of St. Elizabeth Healthcare, said the new medical office building will provoide “a real supply of physicians of all kinds of kinds.”

St. Elizabeth Healthcare purchased the Mildred Dean property from the Newport Independent School District for $1.9 million in July 2010. The site is about 14 acres and includes the 40,000-square-foot building, but Karrick said the medical office building will be newly built.

The site is just east of Interstate 471, borders Fort Thomas and has views of the Cincinnati skyline.

When the property was purchased, Karrick said there were no definitive plans for it; however, he did mention the possibility of a medical office building.
